
Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, October 6) — Don’t call them Malditas anymore.
“Personally, if you asked me, I don’t like this word malditas because that doesn’t represent the beauty of being Filipina,” he said during the virtual Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum on Tuesday.
“Now that I’m back with women’s the team, I told the team that we have to stop using by our mouth this maldita word,” he added.
The national squad recently clinched a spot in the AFC Asian Cup for the second straight year. The Filipina booters will try advance to the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time in history.
“I’m using this platform now that as coach of the team to stop using the word maldita because these are not maldita players, they are beautiful, they are good, they are intelligent, and are very disciplined,” Maro said.
Before they return to the pitch, the national team will look for a new label — one that the truly describes Filipina athtletes.
“We’re trying to look for a new one that truly represents to the world the Filipina people,” Maro said.
Philippine women’s football team head coach Marlon Maro doesn’t want to hear people referring to the national squad as “malditas” (bratty) because it has a negative connotation.
