Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, August 27) — The Department of Health on Friday said it has observed that deaths related to COVID-19 are on the rise, inching closer to the average number of deaths recorded during the surge in April.

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said the country is averaging 106 fatalities a day as of Tuesday. The average during the spike four months ago was at 135 deaths per day.

She said some of the deaths verified recently happened months ago, but she did not discount the fact that the fatalities are also on the rise this month.

“Habang tumataas po ang mga kaso, tumataas din ang mga namamatay. Malapit na natin mapantayan ‘yung ating deaths per day during last April,” she said in a media briefing.

The COVID-19 death toll in the country soared to 32,728 on Thursday. This marked the ninth consecutive day of over 150 deaths recorded daily.
