Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, August 6) — San Juan City only needs to administer second doses to nearly 4,000 more people to reach herd immunity against COVID-19, Mayor Francis Zamora told CNN Philippines on Friday.

The remaining 3,596 people comprise 4% of the local government’s target population, Zamora added. Herd immunity means a significant portion of the population should be protected against COVID-19 through vaccination to stop the spread of the disease.

Zamora said San Juan has 244 active cases or sick patients as well as six cases of the highly contagious Delta variant which have all recovered. Among the Delta cases, three are minors, he said.

The mayor said officials are unsure if there are still Delta infections among active cases since not all are subjected to genome sequencing.

“It’s possible na marami sa kanila ay [many of them are] Delta variant,” said Zamora on CNN Philippines’ News.PH

Of these ill residents, only two are severe condition, 20 in moderate condition and the rest with mild symptoms or are asymptomatic, which Zamora says is an indication that the vaccines are working.

The mayor also said the local government is preparing to release another round of financial aid to residents on Monday. The cash is ready but banks are closed for the weekend.
