Boxer Irish Magno outpoints Kenyan foe, secures spot in Round-of-16

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, July 25) – Filipino boxer Irish Magno displayed her dominance against Kenyan foe Christine Ongare to clinch a spot in the Round-of-16 of the Tokyo Olympics women’s flyweight competition, Sunday at the Kokugikan Arena.

Magno scored a unanimous decision win against Ongare, with four of the five judges scoring 30-27 in favor of the Filipino pug. One judge gave a 30-26 score for Magno.

The Iloilo native boxer made a strong impression early in the first round as she landed powerful punches that forced the Kenyan to adjust her headgear in one occasion.

Magno carried her strong start in the last two rounds as she joined Nesthy Petecio in the list of Filipino boxers who qualified in the second round of the Tokyo Olympics boxing competitions.

Magno will face Thailand’s Jutamas Jitpong in the next round on July 29 at 12:34 p.m. Philippine time.
