Petro Gazz prevails over Army in rain-delayed match

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, July 18) – The Petro Gazz Angels bucked a three-hour rain stoppage to cruise to a four-set victory over the Black Mamba-Army Troopers in the 2021 PVL Open Conference on Sunday at the PCV Socio-Civic and Cultural Center in Bacarra, Ilocos Norte.

Ria Meneses shone in her first game with Petro Gazz after registering 16 points, nine blocks, and one service ace in their 25-19, 22-25, 25-20, 25-21 win over Army.

The Angels took a 1-0 advantage through a Remy Palma running attack and a Gretchel Soltones ace for a 25-19 first set win.

However, league officials stopped the game at 4:46 p.m. in the middle of the second set due to severe rain in the area. The continuous rain caused some slippery spots on the court.

The game resumed before 8 p.m. after the rain subsided.

When the game resumed, Petro Gazz picked up the momentum where they left off, as the combined efforts of Meneses, Gretchel Soltones, and Ces Molina propelled them to victory in the five-hour match.

Soltones garnered 18 points while Myla Pablo and Molina notched 16 and 15 markers, respectively, for the Angels.

Jovelyn Gonzaga topscored for the Army Troopers with 17 points, followed by Joanne Bunag’s 14, and Honey Royse Tubino with 13 points.

Due to the long stoppage in the match, league officials decided to postpone the Bali Pure-Choco Mucho game to a later date.
