PH records 6,100 more COVID-19 infections; active cases nearly at 52,000

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 20) – The Department of Health announced on Thursday 6,100 more COVID-19 infections in the country, as new virus deaths breached a hundred for the third consecutive day.

Latest figures show the total case count has climbed to 1,165,155, of which active cases number 51,912 or 4.5% of all infected.

The great majority, or 93.1%, of currently ill patients are tagged as mild, 2.1% as asymptomatic, 1.5% as critical, 2% as severe and 1.31% as moderate.

The department also confirmed 135 more fatalities, including 71 which were earlier tagged as recoveries. These brought to 19,641 the total lives lost to COVID-19, which translates to 1.69% of all cases.

Meanwhile, 4,071 were added to the survivor count, which reached 1,093,602. This means 93.9% of the total infected have already gotten well.

The case update does not yet cover results from three testing laboratories which failed to submit their reports on time, the DOH noted. Based on data from the past two weeks, the three contribute around 0.8% of all samples tested and 2.1% of positive cases.

The department also removed 16 duplicates, including 11 recoveries and one death, for the latest bulletin.

A separate report by the Department of Foreign Affairs showed COVID-19 cases among Filipinos slightly rose to 18,634 with one more detected. Recoveries also increased by four to 11,396, while deaths are still at 1,163.

Nearly three months after the start of the vaccine rollout, some 2.5 million people in the Philippines have been inoculated against the coronavirus, including 786,000 who have received their second dose.
