Magnitude 5.8 quake rocks Occidental Mindoro town; tremors felt in other parts of Luzon

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 12) — A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck the municipality of Abra De Ilog in Occidental Mindoro on Wednesday at 9:09 a.m, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported.

The agency said there are no reports of damage so far, but aftershocks are expected. Tremors were also recorded in other parts of Luzon.

Intensity V, characterized by “strong” shaking, was felt in Lubang town, Occidental Mindoro; Calamba City in Laguna; Calatagan and Calaca in Batangas.

Intensity IV, or “moderately strong” vibrations, was reported in Malvar and Lemery, Batangas; Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro; Mendez, Cavite; Limay, Bataan; Tagaytay City; Manila City.

Intensity III, or “weak” vibrations, was meanwhile felt in Agoncillo, Cuenca, Lipa City and Talisay, Batangas; General Trias City and Dasmarinas, Cavite; Calamba, Laguna; the cities of Makati, Muntinlupa, Mandaluyong, Pasay, Pasig and Quezon City, Metro Manila; San Pedro, Laguna.

Shaking was also “slightly felt” in Caloocan City and Marikina City, Metro Manila; Olongapo City, Zambales; Cavite City; Sta. Cruz, Laguna; Taysan, Batangas; Batangas City; Lucena City; Binangonan, Rizal; as well as in Dolores and Mulanay, Quezon.

According to Phivolcs, the quake is tectonic in origin, which means there was a movement in the Earth’s crust, and it had a depth of 110 kilometers.
