Dagupan City logs record 51°C heat index

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 9) — PAGASA recorded a heat index of 51°C in Dagupan City on Saturday, the hottest computed in 2021 so far.

The recent value, which was logged at 2 p.m. on Saturday, surpassed the previous record high of the year at 49°C in the same place on April 6.

The heat index provides the “apparent” temperature or what humans “perceive or feel” as the temperature affects their body, according to PAGASA.

“High air temperatures and high relative humidity will give high apparent temperatures or indices,” it added, noting full exposure to sunshine may increase the heat index by 8°C.

Saturday’s reading in Dagupan City falls within the danger range, which spans 41°C to 54°C according to the agency. Temperatures within this band are “likely” to cause heat cramps and heat exhaustion” and heat stroke is “probable with continued activity.”

On Sunday, PAGASA weather forecaster Meno Mendoza said the heat index in Dagupan City reached 49°C, Sangley Point in Cavite registered 46°C, and Ambulong, Batangas logged 45°C.

To deal with such high temperatures, the public is advised to stay indoors as much as possible. If air conditioning is unavailable, individuals may stay instead in the lowest floor out of sunshine.

Regular hydration is also encouraged, as the body needs water to remain cool. Liquor, meanwhile, is discouraged during heat emergencies as alcohol dehydrates the body.

Individuals must also eat small but more often, said the agency, while avoiding high-protein foods as they increase metabolic heat.

Should one need to go outdoors, wear lightweight clothing with light colors as they reflect the sun’s energy, said PAGASA.
