Nearly 80% of traditional jeepneys back on Metro Manila roads

“Marami sa kanila [jeepney drivers] ay namamalimos na sa kalsada para lamang makakain,” says Ernie Cruz, president of the National Confederation of Transport Workers Union.

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 16) — Almost 80% of the registered traditional jeepneys are now back on Metro Manila roads, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board said Friday.

“Halos 80% ng traditional PUJs (public utility jeepneys) ang naibalik na sa pre-COVID routes,” LTFRB Executive Director Joel Bolano told a virtual briefing.

He said almost 40,000 traditional PUJs are now up and running, catering to commuters in the National Capital Region. So far, the transportation agency has opened 414 routes for traditional jeepneys.

“Nakakatugon na po ito sa pangangailangan ng mga pasahero,” Bolano added.

Data from the Department of Transportation earlier showed there were 51,000 registered PUJs in the NCR.

The LTFRB said last week it would open more routes in Metro Manila and boost public transportation by providing the go signal for another 4,400 traditional jeepneys and provincial buses to ply the roads of the capital.
