The death toll climbed to 14,059 after the DOH confirmed 242 new fatalities, including 133 which were previously classified as recoveries before final validation.
Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 7) — Over 14,000 people nationwide have lost their lives to COVID-19, the Department of Health reported Wednesday.
This is the third highest one-day tally of deaths since the local outbreak started. It also came just a day after the country registered a record high count of 383, most of which are delayed reports.
The DOH also announced 6,414 more infections, raising the total to 819,164. Of this number, 158,701 or 19.4% are currently ill patients. These include 97.5% classified as mild, 1.2% as asymptomatic, 0.5% as critical, another 0.5% as severe, and 0.3% as moderate.
The daily number of new cases has not fallen below 8,000 over the past six days, but the apparent decline in the latest figures is due to the low number of samples received by testing laboratories on Monday, the department said. It added that five laboratories weren’t able to submit results on Tuesday and are not yet part of the updated data.
The bulletin also showed the daily positivity rate stood at 18.2% as of noon of April 6. This means nearly 1 in 5 individuals tested on the same day was found positive for the viral illness.
Meanwhile, the number of survivors rose to 646,404 after 163 more patients recovered, the DOH said.
It also pointed out it removed from the overall count 10 duplicate entries, including seven recoveries after data validation.
Among Filipinos abroad, cases rose to 16,581 with 12 more detected, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs. Five more have gotten well, raising the recoveries to 10,070, while a new death brought the total to 1,059.
