BIR: No deadline extension for filing tax returns, payments

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 7) — The Bureau of Internal Revenue said the deadline for filing of tax returns and tax payments is still on April 15 for taxable year ending on December 31, 2020. The bureau made this clarification amid news reports claiming there was an extension.

However, the BIR allowed taxpayers to pay a tentative AITR or annual income tax return on or before the deadline without imposition of increments.

“Provided that, a taxpayer whose amended returns will result in overpayment of taxes paid can opt to carry over the overpaid tax as credit against the tax due for the same tax type in the succeeding period or file for refund,” the BIR said.

The returns may also be amended on or before May 15 without imposition of increments, it added.

All tax returns, attachments, and documents can be signed through an electronic signature. Last month, the BIR also said filing of returns within March 22 to April 30, 2021 can be done even outside the jurisdiction of the Revenue District Office where they are registered.

Finance Secretary Sonny Dominguez earlier pointed out that with the shift to digital operations, 85% of tax payments were done through electronic channels while almost 100% of tax returns were filed online.

Metro Manila and four nearby provinces have been under the strictest form of lockdown since March 27 and will continue until April 11 for now, due to the recent surge in COVID-19 infections that has overwhelmed hospitals.
