Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, March 11) — A magnitude 5.1 earthquake hit the waters off Santa Cruz, Zambales on Thursday, state seismologists reported.
The tremor struck west of Santa Cruz town at 3:24 p.m., according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology or Phivolcs. It earlier announced a magnitude 5.7 earthquake but later downgraded it.
Phivolcs said the quake, which had a depth of 15 kilometers, was tectonic in origin – indicating there was a movement in the Earth’s crust.
Phivolcs is not expecting any damage from the temblor but said aftershocks may be recorded.
