Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, November 8) — The Senate approved on third and final reading a bill granting an increase in the supplies allowance for public school teachers.

Voting 22-0, senators on Monday passed Senate Bill 1092, which seeks to augment the allowance for public school teachers starting 2021.

If signed into law, teachers will receive ₱5,000 for their supplies allowance beginning next school year.

For the school year 2023-2024, this amount will increase to ₱7,500, and will further climb to ₱10,000 by 2024.

The measure states that funds for the allowances will be placed in the budget of the Department of Education.

Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon initially suggested to hike teachers’ allowance to ₱20,000, but he balked at his proposal due to the expected lower tax collections in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Public school teachers are currently receiving ₱3,500 chalk allowance for their teaching supplies.
