China bars entry of Filipinos, foreigners from PH, with exceptions

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, November 5) — China is temporarily suspending the entry of non-Chinese nationals from the Philippines, including those with valid visas and residence permits, with a few exceptions.

In a statement on Thursday, the Chinese Embassy in Manila announced that only those with diplomatic, service, courtesy, or crew visas can enter China.

“Foreign nationals visiting China for emergency needs may apply for visas at Chinese Embassy or Consulates,” the embassy said.

Meanwhile, foreign nationals in the Philippines who secured their visas after Nov. 3 will not be affected by the ban.

The Chinese government is tightening restrictions on the Philippines, which has recorded over 388,000 coronavirus infections. The same measures are imposed on Belgium and the United Kingdom, CNN International has reported.

When the coronavirus started spreading across the world in March, China denied entry to foreign nationals. It later lifted the ban on some countries, including the Philippines, subject to health protocols.

“The suspension is a temporary response necessitated by the current situation of COVID-19. The above-mentioned measures will be assessed in accordance with the evolving situation and any adjustment will be announced accordingly,” the embassy said.

China, where the COVID-19 outbreak originated, reported more than 91,000 infections since December 2019.
