Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, September 8) — The new training protocols set by the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) have a focused approach on each player’s role in the team, San Miguel Beermen head coach Leo Austria said on Tuesday.
In an interview with CNN Philippines’ Rico Hizon, Austria explained the per-batch training of four players and two coaching staff in a court enables him to concentrate on his players’ strengths and weaknesses in their playing positions.
“Pinagsama-sama ko itong mga [We grouped the] big man, point guard, and the wingman and then we do the skills and roles what they’re going to perform in our team,” said Austria, who shared the Beermen started training last August 25.
But the eight-time PBA champion coach admitted the 5-on-5 play is still needed to fully harness the players’ on-court abilities and the right team chemistry.
“If it is possible before opening, I hope there will be tune-up games,” added Austria.
Austria also assured he is reminding his players and staff to observe health and safety protocols set by the PBA and the government. He also advised his players to take care of themselves, as they prepare for the possible resumption of Season 85.
“I give instructions to the players that as soon as possible, they have to get back in shape right away. Four weeks or five weeks is not enough, but we will do it because of the eagerness of the players and the fans (to resume action),” said Austria of the Beermen, still missing the services of six-time PBA Most Valuable Player June Mar Fajardo who is now recuperating from his shin injury.
