Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, July 22) — Marawi priest Teresito “Chito” Soganub, who was rescued from Maute fighters in 2017, died on Wednesday due to cardiac arrest.
Marawi Bishop Edmin dela Peña announced in a Facebook post that Soganub peacefully died in his sleep in his home in South Cotabato.
Maute militants linked to the Islamic State group held the Catholic priest captive for nearly three months starting May 23 in 2017, when the Marawi siege broke out. He was among six people taken from the Cathedral of Maria Auxiliadora on the night of the attack.
