Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, July 8) — Drinking liquor and alcoholic beverages in public spaces will be prohibited during state of calamities, public health emergencies and similar occurrences in Makati City beginning next Tuesday.
Makati Mayor Abby Binay announced Tuesday that city council approved City Ordinance No. 2020-152 which will come into effect on July 14.
Under the ordinance, first time violators will be fined P5,000, the mayor said.
Second-time offenders will also be ordered to pay the same amount and/or could be jailed for up to one month, while third-time violators may be fined P5,000 and/or imprisoned for a year if courts allow, she added.
Meanwhile, liquor consumption during times of crises is allowed inside a person’s home.
The similar rule applies to people staying in rented spaces such as hotels, motels, apartments, apartelles, bed and breakfast, transient houses, dormitories, and bed spaces.
Binay said persons in charge of the establishment where the violation has taken place will also be penalized, except if they are able to prove that they tried to stop their tenants and guests from drinking.
