Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, June 25) — Traditional jeepneys may be back on the road by next week but on certain conditions, a transport official clarified.

Department of Transportation Assistant Secretary Goddess Libiran said traditional jeepneys may be allowed to operate “when there is a lack in supply of buses, modern PUVs and UV Express,” adding that they should also comply with health and sanitation measures.

This comes after Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board Chairman Martin Delgra announced the agency will open slots for jeepneys and UV Express next week, but following the “hierarchy of modes” for allowing type of public transportation to resume operations.

He said the traditional jeepney falls below UV express, modern jeepneys and buses in the hierarchy.

This is in line with the government’s Phase Two implementation for resumption of public transport in areas under general community quarantine.

Phase One began on June 1 which included the operations of rail transport, point-to-point (P2P) bus service, city buses, taxis, Transport Network Vehicle Service, shuttle services, tricycles, and bicycles.
