Pope Francis appoints new Cagayan de Oro archbishop

(CNN Philippines, June 24) — Pope Francis has named Bishop Jose Cabantan as the new archbishop of Cagayan de Oro, the Vatican’s news service reported Tuesday.

Cabantan, currently the bishop of Malaybalay, Bukidnon, will succeed Reverend Father Antonio Ledesma, who retired at 77, the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines said in a post in its CBCP News website.

Cabantan, 63, also serves as president of the CBCP Committee on Basic Ecclesial Communities.

He was ordained as a priest on April 30, 1990 in his hometown in Lagonglong in Misamis Oriental.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, a master’s degree in pastoral ministry and a licentiate in sacred theology.
