Ogie Alcasid donates massive toy collection to help boost COVID-19 testing capacity

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 27) – Multi-awarded singer-songwriter Ogie Alcasid has decided to let go his toy collection of 24 years to donate to a campaign spearheaded by fellow celebrities aimed at helping increase the country’s testing capacity to fight COVID-19.

Alcasid shared to CNN Philippines that he has a massive toy collection, which includes characters from Star Wars, Voltes V, Mazinger Z, Marvel, and DC Comics.

He thought of donating his toys while cleaning their house during the quarantine.

“I said to myself that it’s time to let them go and it’s time to help,” shared Alcasid, known for the classic OPM hits “Pangarap Ko Ang Ibigin Ka,” “Bakit Ngayon Ka Lang,” “Nandito Ako,” and “Huwag Ka Lang Mawawala.”

The husband of Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez made a decision to donate his toys to the Shop and Share project, spearheaded by A-List actresses Angel Locsin and Anne Curtis, by posting them in his Instagram account.

It is a revival of the project which Locsin and Curtis first initiated during the onslaught of Typhoon Ondoy in 2009. It aims to raise funds to purchase COVID-19 test kits that will help boost the country’s mass testing capacity.

“If we gonna keep on complaining and not doing nothing, parang wala lang (nothing will happen),” he stressed. “We thought of Angel’s initiative as brilliant and brave so I joined the bandwagon.”

The former president of the Organisasyon ng Pilipinong Mang-aawit hopes his toy collection will become an instrument to ease the COVID-19 crisis in the country.

“This is something that I have cherished for the most part of my life and I think God was just preparing me to collect all these for this special time,” Alcasid disclosed.

The OPM icon is also active in online concerts, which also raise funds to help the vulnerable sectors of the society affected by the pandemic.
