Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 15) — Former Senator Tessie Aquino-Oreta has died, her son confirmed on Friday. She was 75.

Her son, Malabon Mayor Lenlen Oreta, said she passed away on Thursday night. The cause of death was not disclosed.

“On behalf of my family, it is with great sadness that I announce the passing of my mom at 10:48 p.m. of May 14. Former Senator Tessie Aquino-Oreta was a public servant who devoted her life to the country and her adopted hometown of Malabon. She was a loving grandmother, mother, and wife and a friend to those whose lives she touched. We ask for your prayers for mom,” the mayor wrote on his official Facebook page.

Maria Teresa Aquino-Oreta was elected Senator in 1998 and served during the 11th Congress. Before joining the Senate, she was a member of the House of Representatives for three consecutive terms, from 1987-1998, representing the district of Malabon-Navotas.

She was the youngest sister of former Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., whose assassination in 1983 sparked a series of protests that led to the ‘people power’ revolt which ousted then strongman Ferdinand Marcos in 1986.
