218 more Filipinos abroad infected with COVID-19, bringing total to 2,140 — DFA

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 8) – The number of Filipinos abroad infected with COVID-19 reached 2,140, with the Department of Foreign Affairs reporting 218 new cases on Friday.

The DFA said 244 overseas Filipinos have died from the viral disease. Yet, the number of recoveries remains much higher than the number of casualties as 574 patients recuperated.

Meanwhile,1,322 infected Filipinos are still undergoing treatment.

The DFA said the confirmed cases of Filipinos abroad were recorded in 46 countries, with the highest count coming from Europe at 647. It was followed by the Middle East and Africa with 616 cases in all, the Americas with 504, and the Asia Pacific with 373 cases.

According to the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center, there are now over 3.8 million COVID-19 cases worldwide in 187 countries.

Global recovery is now more than 1.2 million and the death toll is at 269,000, the center also said.
