Cebu City (CNN Philippines, April 29) – More inmates and jail personnel have been infected with COVID-19 inside the Cebu City Jail, with the confirmed cases reaching 212 as of Wednesday.
Three hundred eighty tests were conducted inside the jail, during which 186 inmates, 24 Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) personnel, and two kitchen staffers tested positive for the coronavirus.
BJMP Central Visayas Director Efren Nemeno said some of the inmates exhibited mild symptoms like fever, while only one BJMP empoyee showed symptoms of infection.
None of the new infections, however, require hospitalization based on the assessment of the local health department.
Nemeno assured that those who tested positive have been isolated from other inmates. They are currently assisted by the city health department, he said.
“It is not true that we just left our PDLs alone being infected with the coronavirus,” he said. “In fact, our city health department is regularly going there to supervise the containment measures.”
Nemeno added that swab testing is ongoing inside the jail facility.
