San Juan City events suspended as coronavirus cases rise

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, March 9) — All government-related events in San Juan City are suspended until further notice due to coronavirus fears, according to the mayor.

In an executive order dated March 6 and released Monday, Mayor Francis Zamora ordered to halt all activities, including seminars and team-buildings, to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), which has infected at least 20 people in the country.

The directive also covers activities that will be held in different places in collaboration with the city government.

The local government earlier temporarily closed the prayer hall at Greenhills Shopping Center, an area one of the confirmed coronavirus cases regularly visited. The man has no history of foreign travel, making him the country’s first local case, according to the Healh department.

President Rodrigo Duterte has declared a state of public emergency in the wake of more COVID-19 infections. The move will let officials easily access finances to combat its spread, and will also allow authorities to enforce mandatory quarantine for travelers.

The virus has infected over 110,000 persons worldwide, and killed over 3,800 as of Monday.
