Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, March 4) — The Department of Labor and Employment encouraged companies to adopt a flexible working schedule instead of laying off employees or shutting down amid the coronavirus outbreak.
“The Department recognizes the desirability and practicality of flexible work arrangements that may be considered by employers after consultation with the employees, taking into account the adverse consequence of the situation on the financial viability of the company,” said DOLE in advisory released Wednesday.
It suggested three flexible working arrangements such as reduction of workhours and/or workdays; rotation of workers; and forced leave wherein employees are required to utilize their leave credits for several days or weeks.
However, the agency noted that the working arrangements are only temporary.
The department also advised companies to notify field or regional offices of the agency of any adoption of flexible work arrangements.
Recently, Philippine Airlines laid off 300 personnel, citing losses in 2019 aggravated by recent travel restrictions due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus. More than 90,000 people worldwide have been infected by the virus, which causes the COVID-19 disease.
CNN International also reported that Hong Kong flag carrier Cathay Pacific asked its 27,000 workers to take three weeks off without pay to preserve cash and keep the airline afloat.
