Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, March 4) — Congress ratified on Wednesday the bicameral version of the bill requiring students from kindergarten to high school to take classes on good manners and values.

The Good Manners and Right Conduct (GMRC) and Values Education subjects will replace the existing Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao subject in the basic education curriculum.

The bill is now up for President Rodrigo Duterte’s signature to become a law.

The GMRC class will be offered in kindergarten and Grades 1 to 6. Meanwhile, Values Education will be taken in Grades 7 to 12.

“The Values Education shall be an integral and essential part of the DepEd’s K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum. Values Education as herein provided shall encompass universal human, ethical, and moral values, among others,” read the bill.

The subject also aims to teach students respect for intercultural diversity, gender equity, peace and justice, obedience to law, nationalism, and others.

Teachers with certificate or diploma in teaching Values Education or allied disciplines shall be prioritized to teach the subject.

The GMRC and Values Education subjects were not offered anymore in the basic education curriculum since the transition to K to 12 program in 2013.
