Battle of the rivals headline UAAP volleyball opening

The Adamson University and the National University will also face each other on the second day.

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, February 6) — Fans are up for a treat as old rivalries will rekindle in the opening weekend of the UAAP volleyball tournament next week.

The University of Santo Tomas (UST) and Far Eastern University (FEU) will resurrect their rift in the opening day on February 15.

The two teams were considered the most bemedalled volleyball programs. FEU has the most number of championships both in the men’s and women’s division, with 25 and 29, respectively. Meanwhile, UST followed with 19 championships in the men’s division and 16 in the women’s.

Yet, the rivalry of the two died down as other volleyball programs improved. The last time that the two met in volleyball finals match was in Season 74 of the men’s volleyball, where FEU won the title.

Also facing off during the opening is the University of the East and University of the Philippines.

Ateneo de Manila University (Ateneo) and De La Salle University (DLSU) will highlight the second day on Feb. 16.

Considered as the most popular rivalry in the league, the Ateneo-DLSU rivalry was only known in the basketball tournament. But since Season 74, the two met in the women’s volleyball finals for six straight seasons.

In Season 80, DLSU faced off against FEU and last season Ateneo met UST in the finals.

Further, a new schedule scheme will be followed this season as each playdate will have alternating division matches.

Unlike the previous seasons, all matches in the men’s division are scheduled in the morning block, while the women’s division games are scheduled in the afternoon.

The men’s division games will be at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., while the women’s division games will be at 10:30 a.m and 3:30 p.m.

The same teams will play in the men’s and women’s games per playdate in the first round.
