LIST: Class suspensions due to coronavirus

St. Jude Catholic School Director Fr. Emilio D. Lim on Tuesday said the school continues to be vigilant. It is requiring all students to come to school in face masks. Those who have been to countries with confirmed coronavirus cases but do not show flu-like symptoms are advised to skip school until they secure a medical clearance.

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 28) — Several Chinese schools in Manila City are suspending classes this week as a precautionary measure against the possible spread of novel coronavirus.

The following schools have announced the suspension of classes:

Chiang Kai Shek College, Algue and Narra campuses (January 27 to February 8)

St. Stephen’s High School (classes suspended indefinitely)

Hope Christian High School (classes suspended indefinitely)

Uno High School said they are gathering more information on travel details of their students and staff during the Chinese New Year break.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said on Monday that there is no confirmed case of the novel coronavirus or 2019-nCov in the country. The suspension of classes is not in line with current DOH guidelines, he added.

“Definitely no need as of now,” he said on Monday.

Education Secretary Leonor Briones said private schools who chose to suspend classes have to conduct make-up classes.

On Monday, several other schools suspended classes, which have since resumed. They include Philippine Cultural College, Tiong Se Academy, St. Jude Catholic School, Lorenzo Ruiz Academy, Philippine Academy of Sakya, and Pace Academy.

The new coronavirus has left 82 people dead and more than 2,700 cases in mainland China. There are more than 50 confirmed cases in 13 other countries.

People can spread the virus before symptoms show, China’s health minister said Sunday, complicating efforts to contain the outbreak.
