Pasig gov’t regularizes dozens of city hall workers

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 22) — Dozens of contractual workers in the Pasig City Hall were given permanent work status, Mayor Vico Sotto said on Tuesday.

He said they have regularized 53 employees who have served as contractual workers in the local government for at least 20 years. The millennial mayor said this is in line with their push to give job security to qualified workers.

“Ito po si Roberto Rodrigo. Mahigit 43 YEARS na contractual (casual) employee ng Pasig City Hall. Permanent na siya ngayon,” the mayor wrote on his Facebook page.

Sotto, who ended the 27-year rule of the Eusebio clan in Pasig, added he has information that the city hall’s contractual workers have been controlled and threatened during election period. He said this practice ends during his term.

“Dati, lagi silang tinatakot na makikita kung sino ang binoboto nila at di na sila ire-renew kapag dun sila sa “kalaban”… Ngayon, wala nang ganitong takutan,” he said.

Sotto assured the public regularizing the workers was not a political move.

“Walang politika sa pagdedesisyon natin dito. Pinapatay natin ang palakasan o “patronage” sa pamahalaan,” he wrote.

[Translation: There is no politics involved in the decision to regularize them. We are taking out patronization in our government.]
