Fugitive cop tagged in Maguindanao massacre yields

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 22) — A fugitive cop involved in the Maguindanao massacre surrendered to authorities on Tuesday.

PO1 Ysmael Baraquir submitted himself to the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) in Pagalungan, Maguindanao. Baraquir was mistakenly listed as one of the acquitted when a Quezon City court handed down its verdict on the mass killing on December 19 in 2019.

With his surrender, only 77 suspects in the Maguindanao massacre remain at-large.

Two other men tagged in the 2009 killing who were arrested after the verdict will now face trial for the gruesome murder of 57 people, including 31 media workers. Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 221 Judge Jocelyn Solis-Reyes ordered the revival of charges against Kagi Faizal and Gambayan Kasim following their arrests this month.
