Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 13) — With Taal Volcano’s increasing unrest, residents of Batangas and nearby areas have undertaken the necessary safety measures—including evacuating and staying indoors.

Pet owners, however, should not forget about their furry friends — as animals can also be vulnerable to the hazards brought by volcanic activities.

How can one keep pets safe during this calamity? An animal welfare and environmental protection group shared some tips:

Keep pets indoors

In an advisory Monday, the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) urged the public to keep their pets indoors. Large animals, on the other hand, should be safely tucked in stables or any form of shelter.

Don’t expose pet food, water bowls

PAWS also suggested that pet owners wash grass or vegetation—commonly used as food for goats and sheep—to make sure they are free from ash.

Watch out for possible respiratory problems

If your pets show symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, and difficulties in breathing — then it’s best to have them checked by your resident veterinarian.

Give your pets a bath

“Do not let them lick the ash,” PAWS reminded the public.

Keep surroundings clean

Make sure to sweep or wash ashes off your yards or outdoor areas.

Alert Level 4 has been raised over Taal Volcano, following its steam-driven eruption on Sunday. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology warned of a possible “hazardous explosive eruption” and recommended that residents within a 14-kilometer radius of the volcano’s crater be evacuated.
