Eight more firecracker-related injuries reported ahead of New Year

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, December 31) — More fireworks-related injuries were reported a few hours ahead of 2020, according to latest health department data.

The Department of Health (DOH) Epidemiology Bureau, in its December 31 report, said that eight additional injuries were reported, bringing the injury count to 62 between December 21 and early morning of December 31.

All of these injuries were from fireworks. No deaths, stray bullet injury, or firework ingestion have been reported so far from the DOH’s 61 sentinel hospitals.

The injuries recorded are as follows:

NCR – 27

Region I – 8

Region II – 4

Region III – 1

CALABARZON – 4

MIMAROPA – 1

Region V – 4

Region VI -3

Region VII – 6

Region XI – 1

Region XII -3

Of the injured, 51 were male. The patients were between the ages of 1 and 71 years old. Two patients required amputation, 16 had eye injuries, and 47 did not need amputation.

Twenty-nine of the injured used illegal fireworks, including piccolo, boga and kwitis.
