NAIA reopens runways for recovery flights

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, December 3) — The Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) on Tuesday has reopened its runways tonight to accommodate the recovery flights of local and international carriers, says Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA).

MIAA General Manager Ed Monreal said that NAIA runways were reopened at 6 pm to allow domestic carriers to bring back to Manila all their aircrafts that preemptively evacuated to other local airports due to Typhoon Tisoy.

From 6PM to 11PM, the MIAA is expected to receive 53 aircrafts of Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific/ Cebgo, and Air Asia returning from other local airports.

Meanwhile, recovery flights of international carriers will be accommodated from 1:30 am to 3:30 am.

Monreal said that regular scheduled flights will resume by 11pm tonight.

“From 11 tonight, lahat ng regular scheduled flights, mga domestic flights, mga international flights will now start their regular schedules,” he said.

[Translation: From 11 pm tonight, all regular scheduled flights, both domestic and international flights will now start their regular schedules.]

With the return of aircrafts to NAIA, Monreal said that they are hoping that operations in the airport will normalize tomorrow.

“Bukas pa inaasahang maging normal. When we say normal walang cancellations na, walang major delays because of this typhoon. Inaasahang maging normal bukas dahil nakabalik na lahat yung mga eroplano na nasa labas ng Manila International Airport,” he said.

[Translation: We are expecting things to go back to normal tomorrow. When we say normal it means that there will be no cancellations anymore, no more major delays due to this typhoon. We are expecting things will be normal because all aircrafts have already returned to the Manila International Airport.]

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration said that weather will improve in most parts of the country starting tomorrow.

The weather burea noted that Tisoy is expected to exit the country on Thursday.
