Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, October 31) — A healthy sleep is important to overall wellness.

CNN Philippines Business Roundup talked to sleep specialist Dr. Patrick Moral on how one can practice good sleep hygiene.

“We want to observe at least six to at the most nine hours of sleep,” Moral said.

Lacking sleep, Moral said, could lead to lower productivity, vigilance and concentration.

Here are the things to observe to have good sleep hygiene:

1) The room should be dark.

2) Sleep on a comfortable mattress.

3) A cool room temperature leads to better sleep.

4) The less noise, the better.

5) Reserve your bed for sleep.

Moral advised against having a television inside the bedroom, and using gadgets before bed.

“Because it has light, that will increase the melatonin in your brain and that will wake you up,” the doctor said.

He also advised against eating and exercising before sleep.

Ideally, people should have prepared themselves for sleep one hour before their schedule.

For those who work graveyard shifts, Moral advised that they keep their room dark and observe all the rules of good sleep hygiene so they can feel restored even with their unnatural sleep schedule.
