7 events to go to this weekend (October 20 to October 22)

Manila (CNN Philippines Life) — This weekend, celebrate indigenous weavers in a market fair, indulge your inner cinephile in a local film festival, witness the art of pottery of a chef-turned-potter, listen to an artist’s synthpop tunes, take your pick of art activities along Katipunan Ave., immerse yourself in all things LGBTQ, and take a glimpse of Denmark’s culture through their cinema.

Federasyon: Araw ng Kabaklaan

Spend a day of discussions and workshops about all things LGBTQ in Team Magazine’s fundraising event, “Federasyon: Araw ng Kabaklaan” at Pineapple Lab in Makati this Saturday, Oct. 21.

Activities include “How to be a better beki” with John “Sweet” Lapuz and IC Mendoza, a photography workshop with BJ Pascual, a family acceptance forum with GALANG (Philippines) & “parent allies,” and “BDSM Basics for Baklas” workshop with Sean Regala of kink.ph & Dee Sapalo of shibari.ph. Plus, an art exhibition and auction with works by BJ Pascual, Shaira Luna, Czar Kristoff, Regine David, Geric Cruz, and Izzy Tuason.

7th Likhang Habi Market Fair

Weaving communities and local artisans will gather on Oct. 20 to Oct. 22 at the Glorietta Activity Center for the Likhang Habi Market Fair presented by Habi: The Philippine Textile Council. The fair includes lectures that will discuss the importance of preserving and valuing indigenous weaving cultures. Marlon Martin, founder of the Ifugao Heritage School, will also give a talk on cultural appropriation.

QCinema Film Festival

Though the festival has only been around for five years, QCinema has been called one of the most exciting events for local cinephiles. This year, the film festival will run for 10 days (from Oct. 18 to 28) across four cinemas in Quezon City (Trinoma, UP Town Center, Gateway, and Robinsons Galleria).

The full length competition includes eight new films, six films from up-and-coming Asian filmmakers, eight short films, and a whole sidebar dedicated to LGBT films. One of the most awaited sidebars is the Screen International which will feature Cannes Palme d’Or winner “The Square” and the Nicole Kidman and Colin Farrell starrer “The Killing of a Sacred Deer.” Remastered films to be screened include “All About My Mother,” “Blow Up,” and “High School Scandal.” The world’s first fully painted feature film, “Loving Vincent,” about the death of Vincent Van Gogh, will open the festival.

Aleth Ocampo Pottery Launch

Art and design shop Aphro will launch the new pottery collection of Aleth Ocampo, also a painter and the chef behind Sari-Sari Cafeteria in Eastwood, Quezon City. Her pieces — most of them wares for holding food — will be at display starting Saturday, Oct. 21, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., at The Alley at Karrivin, 2316 Chino Roces Ave. Ext., Makati. Fred Perry: Subculture Live feat. Anoraak

Presented by Fred Perry, synthpop artist Anoraak will perform a live electronic set on Oct. 20 at 20:20 bar, Chino Roces Ave., Makati. His underground classic “Nightdrive With You” gained prominence in 2008, and after years of touring, he has now launched his new EP “Black Golden Sun.” The event will also have DJ sets by Liquid Software, Nonplus, Caliph8, and M2M. Katipunan Art Festival

There’s a multitude of workshops, exhibits, demonstrations, and activities to choose from at the Katipunan Art Festival on Oct. 21 to 22. To be held in various venues around Katipunan Ave., Quezon City, the festival features creative talks by Apol Sta. Maria, Romeo Lee, and Googlygooeys, among many others; live mural painting by various artists; film showings such as Mikhail Red’s “50/50” or Kim Zuniga’s “Bimyana”; free guided tours of exhibits inside Ateneo’s newly opened gallery, Areté; and even a coffee-cupping activity in Esteban Abada. Live music in UP Town Center on Sunday, Oct. 22 will feature artists such as Peryodiko and Nanay Mo.

The event is presented by Hey Kessy, What If, Daze, Hidden Space, and Resurrection Furniture and Found Objects. Take your pick among the activities scheduled for the two-day festival by checking out the Facebook event page.

Danish Film Festival

Hosted by the Embassy of Denmark, this year’s Danish Film Festival will screen from Oct. 19 to Oct. 22 at Shang Cineplex, Shangri-La Plaza, EDSA cor. Shaw Blvd., Mandaluyong. The screenings are free, but seats are on a first-come, first-served basis. The Danish films to be featured are “The Commune,” “Long Story Short,” “Key House Mirror,” “Going to School,” “Iqbal Faroq and the Secret Recipe,” “The Sunfish,” “Northwest,” “White Knight,” “Fighter,” “Echo,” and “After the Wedding.”
