Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, August 12) — The Department of National Defense says the suspected Chinese vessel that docked in a Subic resort Sunday was actually a Philippine yacht. The defense department refutes a local news report about an alleged Chinese vessel spotted in Subic on Sunday.
This was after a local news site reported about the vessel, adding that it was loaded with passengers of Chinese nationality.
“Upon verification by our law enforcement agencies: the Coast Guard and the (Philippine National Police) maritime unit, it was found out that the vessel is actually a yacht owned by a businessman based in Subic,” Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said in a statement.
The ship, he added, was originally a Japanese research and survey vessel that was converted into a yacht that now caters to tourists.
