Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 3) — It was a rare scene in President Rodrigo Duterte’s speeches.
The President spoke from behind a bullet-proof glass panel. This was before Malabon City residents during the campaign sortie of his senatorial slate under Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban).
Duterte had appeared on a number of campaign rallies without the protective shield, but this time he had to give in to his close-in security.
“Alam mo ah itong picture frame na ito,” Duterte joked. “Iyon ang hindi ko na kontrolado. Sumama man ang loob ko, magalit ako, hindi ko mautusan ang security setup ng PSG (Presidential Security Group), Presidential Guards, kasi sila talaga ang masunod.”
[Translation: This, picture frame before me. I cannot control that. I may feel bad, I may be angry, but I cannot order the security set-up of the PSG, Presidential Guards, because they are the ones in charge.]
The PSG gave the standard response to an extra security cover for the president.
BGen. Jose Eriel Niembra, PSG commander, in a statement Tuesday addressed supposed threat concerns against the President.
“With or without outstanding threat, it is but imperative for PSG to implement the highest security protocols,” he said.
Niembra said the decision was made after assessing the area.
“PSG decided to put bullet-proof glass on the presidential podium because the activity was situated in an open area,” he said..
Duterte in his speech warned reelectionist Malabon City Mayor Antolin Oreta to rid the city of drug woes or face arrest. He said the city is also hounded by corruption and lack of peace and order. The President is endorsing Oreta’s rival for mayor, current Vice Mayor Jeannie Sandoval.
