
Manila (CNN Philippines Life) — This weekend, learn about art deco architecture, hear a concoction of jazz and classic music at a concert, discuss the ways in which art can be used as a tool for activism, join an intimate book fair, see the works of renowned painters, attend a forum on weaving traditions of indigenous Filipino women, and watch a string quartet of the Philippines’ oldest orchestra perform.
Kwago, a group that provides a platform for Filipino storytellers and publishers, and Warehouse Eight, a coworking and events space, will gather independent bookstores, brands, and art shops from across the Philippines for a one-day book fair on Nov. 18. The event’s tagline is “an intimate gathering of people and books,” as the fair is a response to book fairs that seem to only exist so get rid of surplus books. The event area will have a reading area, an open vinyl lounge, storytelling workshops, and crowdfunding workshops for writers, among others.

Saturday Lecture Series: Understanding Art Deco Buildings
The United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) Diliman Chapter and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts will hold a lecture titled “Understanding Art Deco Buildings and its Sustainable Conversation” on Saturday, Nov. 18, 2 p.m. at the Metropolitan Museum of Manila. The lecture will be in conjunction with an exhibition displaying the works of Juan Arellano called “Framing the Spectacle of Space.” Speakers of the lecture include Ivan Man Dy of Old Manila Walks and architects Gerard Lico and Luisa Daya-Garcia of UAP.

Watch the concert of saxophonist Tots Tolentino and conductor Gerard Salonga on Friday, Nov. 17, 8 p.m. at Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo (main theater), Cultural Center of the Philippines. Tots is known for “having the most distinct and influential sax sound in the Philippines today” while Salonga is a multi-awarded conductor who was part of the Ten Outstanding Young Men list in 2012. The artists will perform Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess,” Williams’ “Catch Me If You Can,” and Dvorak’s “From the New World” (Symphony No. 9 in E minor).

Grrl Gang Manila, a community of women that aims to “create a safe, non-judgmental space for women in the Philippines to discuss issues that affect them,” will host a discussion about making use of creativity as a tool for activism on Saturday, Nov. 18 at the UP Vargas Museum. Curator Lisa Ito and artist Lesley-anne Cao will join the event. Ito will talk about visual images of feminist arguments in history while Cao will focus on the rationale behind her use of soft materials and manual labor in her practice.

As part of MO_Space’s series of shows celebrating the gallery’s 10th year, an exhibition of artists Pardo de Leon and Elaine Roberto-Navas’ will be opened on Saturday, Nov. 18. Curated by Nilo Ilarde, the exhibit will feature paintings of de Leon and Navas that capture mundane moments translated into their signature visuals.

Hinabi: Weaving Towards the Empowerment of IP Women
UP’s Department of Development and Women’s studies will have a forum entitled “Hinabi: Weaving Towards the Empowerment of Indigenous Filipino Women” on Saturday, Nov. 18, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. The forum will present the weaving processes and technology of indigenous Filipino women, and the practices that enhance and empower their skills and cultural traditions.

Manila Symphony Orchestra String Quartet Performance
The Manila Symphony Orchestra, one of the oldest and most historical orchestras in Asia, will have their string quartet perform on Sunday, Nov. 19, 5 p.m. at The Deck, Ayala Malls Circuit, Hippodromo, Makati.
