Manila (CNN Philippines Life) — This weekend, watch an urban artist take over a coffee shop, join families of victims of extrajudicial killings as they call for justice, learn about Maranao food and culture, enjoy performances of folk and indie artists, explore a Korean-themed art fair, go to a fundraising gig for Aeta communities, and attend the store launch of a new clothing shop in Old Manila.

Hallyu is the term used to refer to the Korean wave or the rise of Korean popular culture across the globe, largely because of the popularity of K-pop and K-dramas in various countries. On Sunday, Nov. 5, a Hallyu-themed art fair will be held at Whitespace Manila, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The event will feature sketches, digital art, and photos by Filipino artists who are also fans of the Hallyu phenomenon. Tote bags with K-pop or K-drama designs will also be for sale.

                                                           Koffee Junkie Klub

Interdisciplinary artist Dex Fernandez, the man behind iconic urban illustration Garapata, is transforming the coffee and lifestyle shop The Den on Saturday from Nov. 4 to Nov. 5. The shop will serve Garapata-themed coffee and food from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and the in-house local specialty coffee from Kalsada (a group of young individuals who create coffee by supporting Filipino coffee farmers, and paying them more than fair trade) will also have Garapata-themed limited edition coffee bags. Garapata Koffee Junkie Klub totes, shirts, and stickers will also be available for sale.

As the clock strikes 7 p.m., the space will have DJ sets by Shah Rukh Khan, Paperboiz,

                              Remember the 5th of November – Call for Justice for EJK Victims

Satirical Facebook page Superficial Gazette of the Philippines will be holding a gathering in EDSA Shrine on Sunday, Nov. 5 to call for the Duterte government to stop the war on drugs. Along with the families of the victims of extrajudicial killings, the group calls for the operations supporting the war on drugs to be opened for investigation, so perpetrators of EJKs may be brought to justice. Attendees of the event are encouraged to wear black and to wear masks.

Food for Peace

On Saturday, Nov. 4, a forum on food, empowerment, and community healing called Food for Peace, will feature Maranao food, as the organizers believe that food plays a role in peacebuilding. As a response to the siege of Marawi and its aftermath, the event will not only be a space for participants to learn more about Maranao heritage, it is also a way to show “that eating can be an act of solidarity and food and cooking a vehicle for change and involvement.”

The event will include cooking demos by Maranao chefs, and there will also be discussions on the principles of Islam, creating community gardens, and setting up emergency kitchens in conflict zones like Marawi, among many others.

There will be an admission fee of ₱500. All of the proceeds of the event will go to Modern Nanays of Mindanao, Rural Missionaries of the Philippines – Northern Mindanao region, and Kids for Peace Foundation, Inc., which are organizations that provide either psychosocial services or nutritious food for evacuees.

                                               LIVE: Malaya (4th Anniversary Show)

Malaya Productions, a promoter of local and international artists, will be celebrating their fourth year anniversary at A Space, Makati. The event will have performances by singer/songwriter Johnoy Danao, Kalimba artist Bea Lorenzo, folk artist TheSunManager, indie pop duo Leanne and Naara, soul fusion band Farewell Fair Weather, pop rock band Autotelic, sibling pop duo Ben & Ben, indie pop artist Reese Lansangan, and indie pop/R&B band Jensen and the Flips, among others.

                                  Project Liwanag PH and Liga present: Sampung Ningning sa Dilim

Project Liwanag PH, a nonprofit organization that aims to give solar electricity to indigenous communities, together with Liga Artist Group, a community that promotes Filipino culture through art, is having a fundraising gig for 10 indigenous Aeta communities in Capas, Tarlac on Friday, Nov. 3 at Saguijo Cafe. There will be live performances by Perkywasted, Milo Heraldo, The Cohens, The Morning Episodes, Suits and Sepia, Hotline, Bea Lorenzo, Pinkmen, and K/L. The entrance fee is ₱250, inclusive of one drink.

                                          Ponderosa Hall (Escolta) – Store Launch

Clothing store Ponderosa Hall opens its store to the public on Saturday, Nov. 4 at Room 505, First United Building, Escolta St., Manila. The store launch will have special releases from collaborations between men’s brand The Twelfth House and streetwear brand Progress, among others.
