Fire in Malate leaves 2 dead, guts 150 houses

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, August 18) — Two fires hit residential areas in Manila Friday evening, leaving two persons dead and hundreds homeless.

Manila Fire Marshall Supt. Antonio Razal identified the fatalities as Abelardo Salonga, 79 years old, and his son, 47-year-old Jimy, who were killed in the blaze in Malate.

Razal said their bodies were found inside the comfort room.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) said the fire started at around 3:53 p.m. at Camia Street in Adriatico, reaching Task Force Alpha.

By 7:20 p.m., the BFP said the fire was already under control — but had left 150 houses gutted and an estimated P2.7-million damage.

Meanwhile, another fire broke out at a temporary housing building in Tondo.

Officials said the fire started at the second floor of Building 28 at Aroma Street in Barangay Street at 3:09 pm, reaching fifth alarm before being declared under control at 6:09 p.m.

Around 500 families were affected by the fire, damaging property at an estimated cost of P3 million.
