Misfiring Gilas falls short vs. South Korea, ends Jones Cup title bid

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, July 19) — South Korea played as the tormentor again as they dismantled the Philippines in the 2017 William Jones Cup, 83-72, on Wednesday night at the Taipei Heping Gymnasium in Taiwan.

Oh Se-keun showed the way for the South Koreans with 14 points.

The South Koreans deployed a suffocating defense against the Philippine squad which proved to pay dividends in the end.

Gilas was able to cut South Korea’s double digit to four points, 73-69, with less than three minutes to play in the match.

But back-to-back fastbreak points sealed the win for the South Koreans.

A woeful 1-of-26 shooting from beyond-the-arch also did not help the Philippines’ cause as it suffered its second setback in five outings.

South Korea joined Canada and Lithuania on top of the team standings with a 4-1 slate.

Jio Jalalon led the Filipinos with 18 markers.

With the Philippines’ loss, the team is now out of contention for the title but will compete in the remaining games of the tournament.

The Philippines will next face Iraq tomorrow at 5 p.m.
