Manila (CNN Philippines Life) — This weekend, watch a handful of plays and films, express yourself through collage or creative writing, learn how to live sustainably, retreat to a yoga at a weekly Sunday market, and learn more about the Marawi Crisis and what you can do.

                                                    What Went Wrong music video launch

Indie band Rusty Machines will be releasing the music video to their new single “What Went Wrong,” directed by award-winning filmmaker Petersen Vargas. The event doubles as a fundraiser for the band’s upcoming album, which will be released under Wide Eyed Records Manila. Other acts playing are Memory Drawers, She’s Only Sixteen, Ciudad, and Ourselves the Elves.

                                                                       Virgin Labfest

On its 13th year, the Virgin Labfest is an “annual festival of fresh one-act plays by emerging and established playwrights” staged by Manila-based playwrights group Writer’s Bloc, Inc., theater company, Tanghalang Pilipino, and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), in cooperation with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.

An exercise in creativity and experimentation, the festival holds true to its tagline: “Untried, untested, unstaged plays.” This year’s run, entitled “Wagas!,” will be held at the CCP until July 16 and presents 12 new featured works, three ‘revisited’ plays (audiences’ favourites from last year’s festival), five staged readings, and a showcase of works from the VLF Writing Fellowship Program.

Launching alongside the festival this year is “3rd Virgin Labfest Anthology,” composed of selected plays featured in the latest editions of the festival.

                                                         Mixed Media Collage Art Workshop

Stretch your creative muscles with a mixed media collage art workshop this weekend. The class, organized by Woman, Create and led by Clarisse Provido, will be held on July 8, Saturday, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Penbrothers (OPL Building, 100 C.Palanca St., Legazpi Village, Makati City).

                                 Towards Peace in Mindanao: A Listening Forum on the Marawi Crisis

Those seeking to understand the crisis in Marawi are invited to a “Towards Peace in Mindanao: A Listening Forum on the Marawi Conflict” on July 8, Saturday. Organized by the Ateneo de Manila University and The Society of Jesus Social Apostolate, the forum gives space to alternative views and perspectives by those affected by the crisis, in order to come up with “a more inclusive method to address the cycle of violence at its roots.”

Speakers include Yasmira P. Moner, Dr. Saffrulah M. Dipatuan, Milet B. Mendoza, and Atty. Laisa Masuhud Alamia. Simbahang Lingkod ng Bayan will also accept donations during the event (aside from welcoming bank deposits, details included here) for the victims of the crisis.

Registration starts at 1 p.m. at Faber Hall, Ateneo de Manila University, Katipunan Ave., Quezon City, but participants are invited to pre-register through this link.                                                        How to Write Sci-Fi/Fantasy Stories

At a time when “American Gods,” “Game of Thrones,” “Doctor Who,” and other sci-fi and fantasy stories seem to be taking over popular culture, it might be interesting to learn how to build a mythology all of your own. On July 8, Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Fully Booked in Greenbelt 5, Makati City is hosting a six-hour crash course on writing compelling sci-fi and fantasy stories for today’s modern audience, taught by playwright, author, and seven-time Palanca Award winner Dr. Joem Antonio.

                                             5 Elements Yoga at Good Food Sunday Market

Experience Gaia Retreats, a yoga and wellness destination in Dingalan, Aurora at the Good Food Sunday Market on July 9, Sunday, from 7 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Participants are invited to an “all levels hatha yoga class with a focus on connecting to the elements of nature” at Mandala Park, Shaw Blvd., Mandaluyong City.                                               Eiga Sai 2017: The 20th Japanese Film Festival

A documentary on Tokyo’s Tsukiji Market, a family drama centered on an ill matriarch, and story on a Filipino illegal immigrant (directed by Brillante Mendoza) are some of the award-winning films featured in Eiga Sai, the 20th Japanese Film Festival. More than 20 films of different genres will be screened at various venues: the Shang Cineplex, CCP, and the UP Film Institute.

Admission is free for screenings at CCP (Aug. 5 to 11) and the UP Film Institute (Aug. 16 to 19), while tickets are ₱100 per film at the Shang Cineplex (July 6 to 16). There will also be a free screening at the Shang Cineplex on July 14 (Friday) of Tagalized versions of “Sadako vs. Kayako,” “If Cats Disappeared from the World,” and “Bakuman.”
