(CNN Philippines, May 29) — Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio wants all arrested members of the Maute group detained in the city to be transferred to a more secure detention facility, possibly out of the city.
In a press conference Monday morning, the mayor said they were going through the legal process to have the Maute members transferred — not just for the security and safety of the Davaoenos but for the safety of the Maute members themselves.
Duterte-Carpio confirmed the arrest of Maute members in the city last week, in connection with the September 2 bombing of the Roxas Street night market last year where several people died and were injured.
In her Facebook post, the mayor said there were 10 high-risk detainees in the city at present that she wanted transferred to a more secure facility. She did not specify though if they were all Maute members.
The mayor said that they have already coordinated with the Department of Justice for the transfer of Maute members out of Davao City.
She said that it would, however, take time as the Supreme Court would have a say on the matter.
The mayor, meanwhile, assured the public that the city government was on top of the situation in cooperation with the police and the military.
She said the basic human rights of the people would be respected at all times as she urged the public to also cooperate with authorities while martial was still in effect.
Duterte-Carpio admitted some investors and tourists have already expressed their concern with the martial rule implementation, while some have already cancelled their scheduled trips to the city.
The mayor said she had advised them to give the city and the Duterte administration more time as things would normalize soon.
