Flood fails to dampen students’ graduation rites

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 8) — Some students will go to lengths just to push through with their graduation ceremony, even if it means getting their feet submerged in floodwaters.

Around 50 Grade 6 students from Balas Elementary School in Lamitan, Basilan attended commencement exercises with their feet submerged in floodwaters on Tuesday.

School officials decided to just ask the students to take off their shoes and wade in ankle-deep waters so they could continue with the scheduled ceremony.

Principal Maria Nava said the multipurpose hall, the place designated as the graduation venue, was flooded after heavy rain poured just before the graduation rites.

The parents, however, blamed school officials since the rains have been pouring in the city for several days prior to the graduation. Parents said school officials should have looked for another venue.
