Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — The Ateneo Lady Eagles upended their archrivals De La Salle University Lady Spikers, 26-24, 26-24, 21-25, 25-17, before a sellout crowd on Saturday night at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Lady Eagle Michelle Morente topscored the contest with 25 points.
Both squads battled their hearts out for every point, but Ateneo held its ground to finish the first two sets in comeback fashion.
DLSU then regained its groove in the third set by relying on its solid defense and steady offense.
But the Lady Eagles were like a well-oiled machine that pulled away in the fourth set to seal the win.
“Our edge was our experience,” Morente said moments after the game.
Kim Dy led the Lady Spikers with 15 markers.
The victory enabled Ateneo to hold the top spot in the team standings with a 6-1 slate, while La Salle fell to 5-2 at the end of the first round of the tourney.
