Typhoon Nina moves closer to landfall; more storm signals expected

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — Typhoon Nina (international name: Nock-ten) remains strong and has not veered from its course toward the Bicol Region.

As of 8 a.m., weather bureau PAGASA (Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration) said the center of the typhoon was located at 195 km east of Virac, Catanduanes.

Nina has maintained it strength (175 kph near the center) and gustiness (up to 215 kph), and is expected to make landfall over Catanduanes  this afternoon or evening.

Signal number 3 is expected to be raised in 18 hours in:

Catanduanes

Albay

Camarines Norte

Camarines Sur

In 24 hours, the following storm signals are expected to be raised over these areas:

Quezon including Polillo Island

Marinduque

Masbate including Ticao and Burias Islands

Sorsogon

Oriental Mindoro

Storm surge height of up to 2.5 meters is possible over the coastal areas of Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, Albay, and Catanduanes.

Nina is expected to exit the Philippine area of responsibility on Wednesday.
