The Dutch-Filipino film festival, World Travel Expo, and more in this weekend’s event guide

The Cultural Center of the Philippines is showcasing an exhibit dedicated to the comic artist Mars Ravelo, whose characters will be reinterpreted by 13 artists.

Manila (CNN Philippines Life) — This weekend, watch the best of Dutch and Filipino near-classic films, indulge in the paintings and installations from some of the finest galleries in the country, exchange drinks with passion project makers, check out reinterpretations of a renowned comic artist’s work, immerse yourself in a human rights celebration, buy cheap and pre-loved items in a garage sale, book your next trip at an international travel fair, and go skateboarding indoors in a street brand’s anniversary party.

ManilArt 2016

ManilArt is one of the country’s longest-running art fairs, which aims to foster awareness and appreciation for Philippine art through exhibitions, lectures, caravans, demonstrations, and other activities. On its 8th year — kicking off with the theme “Ushering in a New Golden Age of Filipino Art” — ManilArt will be holding a congregation of some of the finest local and international galleries to exhibit their collections as well as an integration of walking tours, cocktail servings, workshops, and performances. All activities will take place at the SMX Convention Center at SM Aura, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig from Thursday, Oct. 6 to Sunday, Oct. 9. Dutch-Filipino Film Festival 2016

The Dutch-Filipino film festival will feature films by Brillante Mendoza, Margot Schaap, Ara Chawdhury, Alex van Warmerdam, Mischa Kamp, Jun Robles Lana, Paula vasn Oerst, and Lav Diaz, some of which will include the local near-classics, “Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan” (Diaz), “Barber’s Tales” (Lana), and “Taklub” (Mendoza). The films will be screened at the Shang Cineplex of Shangri-la Plaza, Mandaluyong City. Admission is free on a first-come, first-served basis. Mars Ravelo Reinterpreted

As part of the Mars Ravelo Centennial Celebrations, the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) is showcasing an exhibit dedicated to the comic artist Mars Ravelo, whose characters will be reinterpreted by 13 artists, as a way of exploring the dichotomy between fine arts and comics. The exhibit will be opening on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 4 p.m. at the Bulwagang Juan Luna (Main Gallery) and Pasilyo Guillermo Tolentino (3/F Hallway Gallery) halls of CCP, Manila. Admission is free.

The Maker’s Setup

Freelancers and makers of local passion projects can learn a thing or two in this casual conference by Warehouse Eight and Whoaremaro, entitled “The Maker’s Setup.” Fostering a community revolving on design, food, tech, non-profit, and entrepreneurship, the conference will feature a handful of speakers from different fields: Dan Matutina, Brian Cu, Jericson Co, Camille Meloto, and Prim Paypon. Interested participants can exchange tips and share a few drinks with fellow project makers on Friday, Oct. 7, from 7 to 11 p.m. at Warehouse Eight, 2241 Chino Roces Ave., Warehouse 8-A, Makati. Early bird tickets can be availed at ₱500 by registering through this link. Walk-ins are also accepted, in exchange of ₱600 per head.

Ignite for Rights: Music X Poetry X Live Art X Advocacy

Human rights volunteers organization Artists for Amnesty is organizing a concert this weekend featuring live music, art, and poetry. As a celebration of rights, there will be an advocacy fair as well as musical performances by Flying Ipis, Talahib, The Republicats, Pow Chavez, Cannabis Ink, Stellar Spectre, Cerumentric, Kill Ratio, DeathToPuberty, HL/DV, Read Between The Lions, and Vagabonds. Admission is free at Liwasang Aurora at the Quezon City Memorial Circle, Quezon City, on Sunday, Oct. 9, from 3 to 10 p.m.

Traveler’s Garage Sale

Moonleaf Tea Shop in Maginhawa frequently hosts garage sales outside their store, and this weekend they are having another one especially put together for those who like to travel. Pre-loved and eco-friendly goodies like bags, clothes, shoes, books, cameras, suitcases and other items will be on sale this Saturday, Oct. 8, from 1 to 6 p.m. at Moonleaf Tea Shop in Maginhawa St., Quezon City. World Travel Expo

The World Travel Expo is a travel fair that will gather more than a hundred booths from participators in the travel industry. There will be workshops, conferences and other activities on tourism, as an assimilated channel among national and international travel stakeholders. Vans’ 50th Anniversary

Celebrating 50 years of art, music, skateboarding, and fashion, the House of Vans Manila will be having a grand and creative party this weekend. Showcasing an art gallery, silkscreen workshops, live art, tattoo sessions, skating ramps, a street market, and live performances by DJs, House of Vans will be open to the public on Saturday, Oct. 8, from 2 to 10 p.m., at the Metrotent Convention Center in Metrowalk, Pasig.
