(CNN) — Panamanian authorities have raided the global headquarters of Mossack Fonseca, a spokeswoman for the country’s attorney general’s office tells CNN.
Authorities say they were looking for documents “related to news reports establishing the possible use of the firm for illegal activities,” according to a press release from the attorney general’s office.
Sandra Sotillo, the spokeswoman, said that authorities began what she called a “visual inspection” at about 6 p.m. ET and expect to continue the operation into Wednesday.
“They will analyze the documents to see if there is any indication of a crime,” Sotillo said.
Panama’s Office of the Attorney General and its Organized Crime Division, the Institute of Digital Forensics, the Judicial Investigation Bureau and the National Police all took part in the raid.
Mossack Fonseca, the firm at the center of the so-called Panama Papers document leak, said it’s cooperating with authorities in the investigation at their headquarters.
Authorities in Peru also raided the law firm’s offices in Lima on Monday.
