Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — Rogen Ladon won’t be flying to Rio alone.
Filipino lightweight Charly Suarez clinched a spot in the upcoming Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro after getting the better of China’s Jun Shan via TKO in the semifinals of the Asian-Oceanic Olympic Qualifiers on Thursday (March 31) in Qian’An, China.
Suarez is the fourth athlete to get the nod to represent the Philippines, after track and field star Eric Cray, weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, and fellow pugilist Rogen Ladon.
The 27-year-old Suarez booked his ticket after reaching the finals of the qualifying tilt, where a podium finish is required to be eligible for Rio.
As of this posting, bantamweight Mario Fernandez and welterweight Eumir Marcial are still in the running for an Olympic berth.
