Internet speed tests by gov’t remain inconclusive

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — Internet subscribers should by now have a good idea whether they are getting faster browsing speed — three months after the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) held tests on fixed broadband service.

But the test results are inconclusive.

And the regulator cites lack of volunteers for the tests.

NTC Deputy Commissioner Edgardo Cabarios says it’s hard to get subscribers on board.

Most of those who refused to take part are citing privacy or security issues — since NTC personnel have to get inside one’s residence to check for network connections.

But the Commission is not giving up. It’s calling for more volunteers to make the tests successful.

Those who want to get their fixed broadband subscriptions tested may call NTC’s hotlines: Tel. Nos. 921-3251, 926-772 and 920-4464.

Consumer group democracy.net.ph is also appealing for volunteers.

It adds the test will take only half an hour.

But if you ask consumer group TXTPOWER, it is a waste of time — especially since reports show the Philippines has one of the slowest Internet speeds in the world.

In a 2015 report of Internet metrics provider Ookla, the Philippines ranked 21st out of 22 Asians countries with the slowest Internet download speed.

Consumer groups agree on one thing though — Internet connectivity should be a top priority of the next administration.
